📢 Important Update from Principal De La Huerta:

New State Law on Cell Phone Use Coming 2025-26

Dear East Austin College Prep Community,

I want to share an important update that will impact all Texas schools—including ours—starting next school year.

Governor Greg Abbott recently signed House Bill 1481 into law, which will prohibit students from using personal electronic devices—including cell phones—during the school day. This statewide policy will officially go into effect beginning in the 2025–2026 school year.

What This Means for Our Campus

While we’re still waiting for the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to release official implementation guidelines, we are already working behind the scenes to ensure that East Austin College Prep is ready. Our leadership team is reviewing and updating campus policies to align with the new state requirements.

Why This Matters

Though this will be a change for many, there are clear benefits to limiting personal device use during the school day. Research and classroom experience suggest that reduced cell phone distractions can:
âś… Improve focus and academic performance
âś… Support stronger peer-to-peer connections
âś… Create a more positive, engaging, and respectful learning environment

What’s Next

As we receive further guidance from the TEA and finalize our campus policies, we’ll continue to keep you informed every step of the way. Our goal is to make this a smooth transition that supports student success.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Warmly,
Mr. De La Huerta
Principal, East Austin College Prep
